Project Summary:
This project would involve the renovation of a W.F. Reynolds & Co. Bank, built circa 1887 in Historic Downtown Bellefonte. The scope of the project included the conversion of the existing first floor bank area into a full courtroom, and the restoration of the 2nd and 3rd floors to provide judge's chambers and additional office space. The project was designed and constructed in accordance with the Secretary of Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and was awarded the 2005 Historic Rehabilitation Award by the Bellefonte Historical Architectural Review Board.
Project Highlights:
The designed and installed HVAC system was a 2-pipe closed loop heat pump system with hot water boiler and cooling tower. The use of this system allowed us to not only provide 13 independent zones throughout the build, but also maintain the historic integrity of the building. While maintaining the historic interior, we also provided full fire suppression, alarm system and elevator to provide full ADA accessibility. The first floor also housed 2 inmate jail cells which utilized the existing bank vaults and required the installation of specific tamper proof fixtures.
Involvement:
My primary responsibility as lead designer for this project was the design of the HVAC and plumbing systems. I also prepared the sprinkler system drawing of intent with sprinkler head layout. In the process, I created the working construction drawings and prepared code submission documents including IECC mechanical and lighting compliance forms. During construction, I represented PBCI - Engineering at all construction meetings to answer questions and assist contractors in problem solving.
