Project Summary:
In addition to chiller replacements, I have also had the opportunity to be involved in several boiler replacement designs. These replacements have ranged from swapping the existing boiler for a new higher efficiency model, to changing the system from steam to hot water.
Project Highlights:
Brookline Boiler (State College, PA)
This was a retrofit boiler replacement job, in which we replaced 2 existing gas fired hot water boilers with one Lockinvar high efficiency, modulating direct fired hot water boiler.
Raytheon Building 5C (State College, PA)
This boiler replacement was particularly interesting in that we replaced an old Clever-Brooks 3-pass steam boiler with 2 high efficiency direct fired Munchkin hot water boilers. This meant that the entire subsequent system would have to be converted to hot water. However, a large portion of the area served by the boiler was given its own geothermal system. Therefore, by simply changing the heating coils in the remaining air handlers to hot water coils and replacing 2 unit heaters, the system was converted to hot water heat.
Involvement:
My primary responsibilities for the above projects was to properly size and select the new boilers and design any and all changes to the existing hot water system, fuel supply piping and new combustion air intake and venting. It was also my responsibility to prepare construction drawings and submission documents for the PA Department of Labor and Industry.
